Seminar and
Retreat
The Masks of Nirvana
Place: Touval, Galilee
Time: Seminar: Thursday May 8th to Saturday May 10th
Retreat: Thursday May 15th to Thursday May 22nd
The tradition of Dzogchen is unique in many ways but
perhaps the most
exciting is the method of instruction that takes the
starting point as the
goal. The path begins with an assumption of its
completion, with a
recognition of our ordinary mind as perfect in
itself. Our highest
existential realisation thus forms the foundation
of that path. In this
seminar and retreat we cultivate the Dzogchen
perspective that gives entry
to that path and the meditation that is
the corollary of that understanding.
The natural state of mind, which we can call
buddhahood, is cloaked
only by an evanescent veneer of conceptual
cloudiness and its varieties
we may call the masks of nirvana.
Recognise the masks for what they
are and each one becomes a skilful
means of attainment. The seminar
employs a basic Dzogchen text
to introduce the nature of mind and thereafter
we explore together the
basic masks of existence – embodiment, survival,
passion and death.
There are no requirements for attendance to the
seminar. But those who
have a background in buddhism will find its
terminology familiar, and particularly, anyone who has practised
buddhist vipasyana or samatha meditation will find themselves well
grounded and is especially welcome.
The substance of this seminar is
the complete fundamental Dzogchen transmission which should be
received over and over again. It is
recommended that anybody intuitively
convinced of the nonduality
of all experience receive this
transmission repeatedly.
Some participants in this inner and outer
environment of tranquillity and awareness may gain
an immediate recognition of the Dzogchen view
(or perhaps they already
possess it) but still that recognition comes and
goes and the means of
a constant relaxation escapes us. The retreat offers
the
skilful means of attaining that relaxation beginning with discussion
and precepts of guru-yoga and continuing with instruction in the
simple yogas of ati-yoga (the inner ruzhen) and the focal points of
attention that act as windows and then doorways into the nature of
mind (semdzins).
This retreat may provide the occasion for a
communion of minds enjoying
the universal truth at the heart of
Buddhist revelation. It is open to all who
have received an
introduction through the Masks of Nirvana seminar
or formal pointing
out instructions from any Dzogchen Lama.

Outer Ruzhen Retreat
Date: June 18th - 28th
Place: Prajd, Transylvania, Romania
Outer Rushen is unique to Dzogchen praxis. It may
provide the opening
up that years of conventional Buddhist meditation
cannot deliver. It is
designed to give us immediate access to the here
and now where the
nature of mind resides. This second Rushen retreat
with the Hungarian
Dzogchen communion will, finally, take us to
Transylvania, in Romania.
We expect that this sacred land of the
Hungarians will provide an ideal
environment for the Rushen
experience.The Tibetan tradition demanded
that individuals or couples
lived out in the mountain wilderness alone for
weeks or months.
Although this is still the ideal mode of practice, the
difficulties of
finding secluded wilderness and a solitary place in
Europe have
resulted in the type of Outer Ruzhen Retreat in a controlled
area
where we are free to express ourselves without inhibition and without
interference. Transylvania would seem to offer these special
conditions.
The qualifications for Outer Ruzhen practice are
simply an unconditional
commitment to Dzogchen that implies receptive
initiation into the nature of
mind. For those who have this
qualification but find the Outer Ruzhen
practice beyond their
capacity, the Inner Ruzhen practices may be done
instead in this
secluded environment. The theoretical background for the
Outer Ruzhen
will be presented in the Tuval (Israel), Athens and Budapest
seminars.
The schedule for each day at the Transylvanian place of practice
will
consist of a Dzogchen presentation and meal in communion and as
much
secluded practice, including the night time, in the individual 'seat'
as
much as each individual participant is capable of. The environment
in
Nagyforrás (Great Spring) near Parajd, on a plateau, by a forest
ranch, is
wild and woolly so be prepared for primitive conditions.
We will meet in Budapest
at Sambhala Tibet Center on June 17th at 9:00am,
where a bus will be provided for the ten hour journey to Prajd. Visas
for
Romania are not required for EU passport holders but better
check with your
Romanian Embassy. Full logistical
information and further details will be

The Heart Core
An Exposition of Dzogchen, the Great
Perfection
Dzokchen is the ultimate secret of the Tibetan Lamas. Zen-like in its
uncompromising insistence upon the middle way and upon our
Buddha-potential, it nevertheless allows us to incorporate our humanity,
in all its multifarious facets, into a spiritual praxis. The aim of this
seminar is to introduce you to a vision, a meditation and a lifestyle
that can remove obstructions to spacious personal freedom: to resolve
confused emotion, to embrace sexuality, to develop compassionate
Buddha-mind, to cultivate an acceptance of death, and to create a
personal mandala of integration and clear purpose.

DZOGCHEN
PILGRIMAGE
Central Tibet and Mt Kailash
August 14th to September 6th
Dear Friends,
I have made a fine itinerary for a Tibet pilgrimage that combines the
main Dzogchen destinations in Central Tibet with a pilgrimage to Kailash.
The twenty-four days is enough to bath luxuriously in the amrita of the
Tibetan plateau. For the first three days we are based in Lhasa; the
next six days take us to the main places of Dzogchen pilgrimage in
Central Tibet, with a night of camping in Chimphu, above the great
monastery of Samye as the highlight. Then the drive to Kailash takes
four days arriving for the great August fullmoon festival (which
includes both Hindus and Buddhists); we are on the Kailash
circumabulation (korra) for three days, a day at the hot springs at
Manasarovar lake, then high-tailing back to Lhasa.
The dates of the schedule are set by the need to be at Kailash for the
August fullmoon festival on the 28th of August. For such a long
pilgrimage (24 days) the cost estimate is excellent, a price that should
exclude no-one.
I am circulating this to the Dzogchen communities internationally so
that we may have a group, a sangha, that has Dzogchen view and
meditation in common. Please understand that this itinerary demands much
from the pilgrims in terms of physical and mental constitution. It gives
us the opportunity of investing optimal aspiration and energy with
generosity, and bringing back the great blessings of the Tibetan power
places home with us. Of course there will be an opportunity to meditate
at our destinations, but the entire venture should be entered into as a
ruzhen, a dzogchen pilgrimage meditation.
This is a provisional itinerary to describe an overview of the
pilgrimage in order to discover the interest it may provoke. A full
description of the destinations will follow later. The final cost will
depend upon the number of pilgrims.
See you there, all best, kuntuzangpo,
Keith Dowman

Seminar: Introduction to Dzogchen
The Heart of the Matter
Time: Thursday 16th to
Saturday 18th March
Place: Touval
This seminar opens the
door to Dzogchen vision and meditation through the Three
Incisive Precepts of Vajra Delight, the final testament
of Garab Dorje, adiguru, founder of the lineage, given
according to Patrul Rimpoche's interpretation: initiatory
experience, the snowball effect and immediate liberation.
Dzogchen
Retreat:
You Are the Eyes of the World:
Time: 28th March to
April 6th
Place: Touval
The unique feature of Dzogchen meditation is an absence
of any technique, by nonmeditation. The method,
therefore, is recognition of the nature of mind, just as
it, without any mental contrivance. The door to this
vision is opened through an exposition of the wheel of
life and the perception of its intrinsic nature. This
retreat may provide the occasion for a communion of minds
enjoying the universal truth at the heart of Buddhist
revelation. Open to all who have received an introduction
through the Heart of the Matter seminar or formal
pointing out instructions.
